    I can attest that most of what Rei writes applies to the other Nordic countries as well. In fact, slow pharmacies and the ubiquitous use of 18th century methods of payment (checks) are some of my pet peeves with the US.

    Also the independence given children is something I wish I could replicate with my own daughters here in the US. I remember being five years old and being able to freely roam the neighborhood with the other kids on my street, my parents considering this perfectly safe. Here, my wife will not even let our six-year-old play in the front yard without an adult right there with her. And all this protection really has consequences. The college students I deal with on a daily basis are on average a good deal less mature than their Swedish peers.
