  •  Pretty simple explanation for this (5+ / 0-)

Not to be contrary, but there's no need for the Kentucky bashing or other attacks.
The counties are not doing well, obviously.  Not surprising they would vote against the incumbent.
They may not understand why they're not prospering, but they don't like it. So they voted for change. Who wouldn't? It's human nature.
If more counties in Ohio and Virginia had those economic numbers Romney would be measuring the drapes. It's wrong but that's how it works.

      so nice try...

    •  Places without "real" economies (0+ / 0-)

haven't benefited as much from the nascent recovery. I do believe that depressed Obama's votes slightly in areas like this (though it can't explain the whole number).

After all, if your area's economy is permanently tied to federal and state stimulus, you probably won't see any significant change in poverty levels, etc, during a recovery that is primarily driven by the private sector.

This applies to states like Oklahoma, Kansas, Alabama, etc as well, where military installations and various federal facilities provide a baseline of decent jobs that keep the economy going, even as real poverty remains steadily high.

    •  my experience is counter to that explanation (0+ / 0-)

If you knew the people who, like where I live, are living in the safety net but are madly "conservative" in their politics, you may think differently.

Maybe you are familiar with the culture, maybe not.

For a somewhat entertianing yet sad view of what I'm talking about, watch the documentary Harlen County USA (1976). In it you can see both collective action by poor southern workers and the injection of the "southern strategy".

Then watch the Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virgina. The worst case example of  what multiple generations of that southern strategy will do to people who while living (and getting very high) on the safety net and voting, with significant margins, for any "conservative."

These are extreme examples, but I see it every day in Alabama.

There are millions who will cut off their own nose to spite their face.
