    Before infomercials were invented, television stations actually went off the air for a few hours each night.

      by McClatchy at the time, according to the spouse, with the use of the "Bee".

      Some  were actually quite elaborate, but all followed the same pattern -- I think the station identification was actually required at some time during the day by FCC rule, so they'd stick it in with the station signoff.
