    That's one of the reasons why we have strong government regulations, to tip the balance of those calculations towards safety. It's also one the compelling arguments against a libertarian utopia where businesses are free to run those sorts of calculations and "let the market decide" which business is run the most humanely or safely or whatever.

    When safety regulations state that a factory must have adequate fire safety protections, it trumps any cost-benefit analysis for maximum profits and simply rolls those safety improvements into the cost of doing business.

      I mean, who would want to trust airline safety to the free market?  I don't want to choose my carrier based on which one crashes less.

        in the unregulated market is to track who actually has crashed this week.

        There is no environmental, social, economic or resource problem that wouldn't be helped by 3 billion fwer people on the planet.
