the 'Dillo and one could actually afford to buy gifts there.
I "lived" at Soap Creek when Willie had it over on Academy /Congress, near what is (god don't strike me dead) what the New World calls "SoCo".

John Kelso once wrote in the Statesman, years ago in a papernewspaper, as money started to flow down Congress and eliminate places like "Just Guns"-
he jokingly said "They can call South Congress,  SoCo, like Soho... "
It was a hilarious joke then since the area was night folks like straight-up dealers, drunks and hookers back then.
    I loved it back then.

Little too "forced" for me to enjoy it anymore.

I don't remember the Bazaar ever being in the AWH.  They were about 20 years apart.

Nor was Soap Creek ever at the Academy/Congress location.  You may be thinking of that place that went in after the old motel was torn down.  It may have been called Austin Opry House.  The name of the motel was "Terrace" and it was a sprawling complex.

As far as I can remember, Soap Creek was out on Bee Caves, and later somewhere way North, Lamar or Palmer.

If I'm wrong, it's the fault of all that weed!  :-)

      •  Yeah, it started there, here's a little history I (0+ / 0-)

But here's a great history of the Bazaar I found while looking for someAWHthing else.

The Bazaar was all over South Autin, even in the Opry house for a few years after the AWH closed; it was in Cherry Creek over on Stassney, like the strip center, then the Music Hall now it's upscale etc.

          Soap Creek on Congress.
It was out on the road and the Opry house was back on Academy, basically half block off Congress. They were in walking distance. Willie changed the name to "Opera" house after the lawyers called a few years into it all.

Townes at Soap Creek- I thought I knew how to use Photobucket but it won't line up.

I don't think I ever went to that location, but I seem to remember that they were there for a short time between the Bee Cave location and far north.

However, I don't think that is the same location as what became the Opry House.  1201 would be about a block north of the Continental Club.  Right?  The Opry House would have an Academy address.

I still don't remember exactly where Soap Creek went when it moved far north, but I do remember that it moved into the old Skyline Club.
