in northern New Mexico, our water supply was a seep-spring uphill of the cabin, among the roots of a large tree. One day I was carefully dipping out water with a Ball jar when a couple of kids from a nearby campground started kicking dirt into the pool. I patiently explained that this was our drinking water supply, that they were making it impossible to collect with minimum dirt that would have to settle out.

They were fascinated, crouched down next to me to watch me get the water and explain about how great the spring water was in the area, and tell them about the big spring down the road where many gallons per minute exited the rocks above the creek and many people filled their water containers there. I gave them a half gallon of water to take back to their camp, they were excited to tell their parents about what they'd learned.

The next day they again came by and sadly told me their mother had forbade them from drinking any spring water because it came out of the "dirty ground." She told them that unless it came out of a pipe and faucet (their home was Chicago) it was far too dirty to drink. She apparently had no idea where water comes from, nor cared to taste any water that wasn't full of chemicals. Weird.

that's probably where your tap water comes from.  River water is usually the filthiest in the world.  And don't think for one moment that it's 100% purified by the time it comes out your tap.

Health departments have begun to take note of the presence of certain drugs in tap water.   The meds were discharged in upstream cities' treated sewage.  Tylenol, anyone?  Got cats?  Yeah.
