    •  An older version had Bob Dole's portrait on it. (7+ / 0-)

Before he ran for president, Bob Dole was a moderate Republican.  Today, all the things he supported in the 70s and 80s, even up to the 90s, would be considered flaming liberal.

He backed clean air, clean water, ADA, social services, on and on.  He couldn't hold those positions and get elected in the poisoned Republican atmosphere of today.

      •  Not really in 1996 as well. (5+ / 0-)

When he was campaigning for President in 1996 for tax cuts the right-wing were jamming down his throat you could clearly see on his face that he hated doing it and didn't believe any of it.

Though of course in 1996 he lucked out.  Patrick Buchanan was the Ron Paul of his time.  Not in policy.  No one ever accused Patrick Buchanan of being libertarian.  But in managing to scare enough Republicans because of his heterodoxical positions on issues like trade that they were willing to support ANY candidate besides him.  I remember a College Republican friend of mine repeatedly calling Dole a "socialist" and completely unacceptable.    Until he too fell in line after Patrick Buchanan's performance in New Hampshire.

Dole morph into a far right parrot.   That's sorta what I mean:

Bob Dole was far to the left of today's Republicans most of his career.

      •  I wouldn't say he was ever a "moderate" (1+ / 0-)

Dole was always a conservative Republican.  And he was known for a sharp tongue that could cut pretty deep (he was hired to be Ford's hatchetman VP nominee during the '76 campaign, famously referring to "Democrat Wars").

But he was also a practical politician, who actually had a goal of serving the people of his country, and making things better.  And being a conservative in the 70s, 80s & 90s meant something different than it does now.
