  •  Thank you for the silver lining. I was really so (5+ / 0-)

emotional over this outrage.  Doing this to all those people who were there precisely because all these Republicans had given their commitment to support it was a heartless act of cowardice.

    •  That makes me glad (4+ / 0-)

I hesitated to post this, thinking it might be seen as disrespectful to your diary by doing some political calculus. So I am very pleased to read your appreciation.

There's no doubt this was as crass a move as there is in politics. The backstab with the smile. People will remember Bob Dole long after this guy hits the dustbin.

As an aside, I've never trusted the type that decides as a teenager that they are the best choice to be a national leader. The jr high school office decor is above and beyond the call of nerd.

kids have posters, clothes laying around, odds and ends of stuff, sports equipment, etc.

He had framed pictures of Washington landmarks, tastefully painted power-color walls, a military-like organization of the room, "power tools" on his desk, like his own landline phone, Roladex (with actual numbers of actual politicians he had gathered up as a kid - it was already pretty full), desk set of blotter pad, pen holders, leather boxes, appointment calendar book, etc, etc.

We didn't have personal computers back then, or he would have had one of those too.  Rows of reference books carefully arranged. Phone books from various Kansas cities. Stationary, not notebook paper.

No clothing exposed outside the dresser and closet. No evidence of personal likes or dislikes in music, art, sports - nothing like that whatsoever.   Looking back, I can't remember him ever saying "what a great song!" or "did you see the Royals last night?"

It was like a corporate office or politicians' staffers office, more than a kids' bedroom.

It was very odd.  Honestly, it sorta creeped me out.  I didn't go back there again.

This kid already knew everything he wanted to ever know, it seems.

This "win" by the GOP didn't do much more than, as Stephen Colbert said, "crush Bob Dole's dying wish." The treaty will be ratified by the US one day.

world view at age 12 and never changed, never learned anything else.

Republican thinking is childlike and simplistic, based on fear and misapprehension of the world, like grade schoolers.
