    was actually teaching basic economics....

    Fiscal irresponsibility IS something that needs to be addressed, and the way to do it would be to teach kids basic economics, since they will be future voters.
    It doesn't sound like it does that--it sounds like it's teaching politicized economics.

      in terms of the federal government, they need to be teaching the basics of macroeconomics.  One of the biggest problems we have in this country is that most people assume that budgeting and spending for a sovereign country with its own currency works the same way as a household or even a business or state government, all of which are forced to balance their budgets.

      If they're teaching "basic" economics, they are probably addressing the microeconomics of budgets that must be balanced, in which case they shouldn't be referring to the economics of the federal government's budget at all unless they're willing to delve into how much different it is.
