Makes me wonder what that airframe would have done with a Merlin. I'm sure that's been pondered before, along with "what would happen if they moved the radiator back towards the tail?"

    •  Here's the news ...it HAD a Merlin!!! (9+ / 0-)

The sub-type was called the P-40F and 1311 were  produced..and it was MUCH better. Here's the really, really BAD news if you were an RAF Squadron Commander in North Africa....you COULDN'T HAVE ANY!

They went to North Africa, where the vast majority were handed over to the USAAF, who, in turn gave them to the Free French!!! The ones which didn't make it to North Africa were sent to Russia.

        shortfinals.

        not even us.

But that seems to me to be a major blunder.

        •  Yup! That one is right up there... (4+ / 0-)

..particularly when you consider the RAF grew up on the Merlin (and didn't much like the Allison) sigh No-one ever said WW2 was easy...

See the STUPIDITY and inter-Service rivalry of George Marshall...Gee thanks, George, for all the extra civilian dead in London!! If Churchill had found out, he would have had FDR have him SHOT!

(NO-ONE in the USA knows about Project Danny, do they?)

          •  First I've ever heard of Project Danny (3+ / 0-)

I'm even more surprised that Ernie King would allow any of his assets being used to help the British.

The Overlord planners didn't really have much use for what the Navy and Marines could tell them about amphibious assault landings.  Apparently there was nothing similar about the two efforts.............

            •  This was strictly part of the air campaign ... (0+ / 0-)

....and had NOTHING to do with Overlord, as such. The Londoners were being slaughtered (over 100 dead in one incident when a V-1 went straight in the door of the Guards Chapel in Whitehall, whilst a service was going on). Churchill was desparate for a solution.

The idea was that the escort carriers would enter the North Sea (air supremacy over coastal waters had been achieved at this point), and the F4U's would use 'Tiny Tim' rockets to take out V-1 'ski-sites' in a much more efficient manner than a bombing campaign with 'iron' bombs.

IMHO, it would have worked.....and saved civilian lives. What Marshall DIDN'T want was the slightest chance of a Marine uniform hanging around in Europe! That is what I find so so disgusting.

Letting civilans bleed and die because of inter-Service rivalry is NOT acceptable!

but there's still plenty of ISR to go around.

I had not heard about Project Danny before now; I mistakenly thought you were referring to the Coventry bombing (and how the Allied command let it go forward so as not to reveal their having broken the Axis codes).

Marshall, eh? If you'd've said Patton ... or even LeMay ... I'd've been prepared to wonder about that. But not with Marshall.
