    Radial engines always did seem to be the preferred engine for bomber and attack designs, who knew that someone was going to be shooting something at them all of the time rather than doing the shooting.  I've often wondered what persuaded AVRO to design the Lancaster with Merlins first from the Manchester when the Vulture engine program went toes up rather than using one of the big radials British industry was producing at the time.
