    The 737 is a turobfan,  There is a large "fan" at the front of the engine.  It both provides cooling, additional power and pre-compression for the turbojet engine behind it.  

    There have been hope to replace those 8 engines with 4 turbofan engines that are on the 747-200/400.  That would give it more power and a greater range.  But sadly the pylons cannot handle that much power.  Project abandoned.
