    And a lot of the radio stuff wasn't horribly reliable either, particularly when you're over the Soviet Union or half-way to nowhere.

    B-52s with aerial refueling have regularly made insanely long round-trip flights w/o a stop in the middle. It seems probable that you need two navigators just so one can sleep sometimes.  (E.g., Diego Garcia, in the Indian Ocean, has been a base for numerous well-publicized sorties to other parts of the world.)
