  •  It looks like I now have 4 housepooties (15+ / 0-)

and a resident stray.  It's a calico so I address her as she.

She seems to like my pooties and they her.  I don't think she finds me at all frightening since she's willing to stand and give me a plaintive little meow when I'm no more than five feet away.  I'm convinced the only reason she's not more of a pet is every time I get anywhere near her my dog Annie sounds off like a banshee.  I know Annie would never hurt a pootie.  She's just loud.

Last week I noticed she was definitely favoring her front leg.  Thinking it may be broken, I called Animal Control.  When I described it to him the next day, he said it sounded like she either twisted it or stepped on something but he could set a trap for her anyway.   I said I'd hate for her to be put down unless she was in extreme pain.   Would it be okay if we just let her be?  That was more than okay with him.  She'd keep the rodents down, that's for sure.  He told me I could feed her a little bit, but not too much and, most important, give her fresh water every day.  Whoda thunk desert critters need water when there's snow on the ground?  But it's true.  They especially need drinkable water in winter.

all animals need fresh water in the winter... It's one of the reasons I keep the fish pond falls going all winter long.... It gives the wildbirds and yes... Even other critters like the pesky squirrels, a place to drink during the frigid months when everythng is frozen.
