Every time there is a cost-of-living increase for Social Security, the cost of the Medicare deduction taken out before the remainder gets deposited in one's bank account goes up, so it barely covers the increase in Medicare.  If the Medicare recipient qualifies for Part D Medicare, then the medicare recipient ALSO has to pay the insurance corporations, thanks to the fancy footwork done by insurance and pharmaceutical corporations when Dumbya was in power, so they also raise their rates.  [Only difference is that Part D qualifiers were told "buy corporate prescription insurance or else."  Now, under Obama, the new health care insurance is "buy corporate medical insurance or pay a $1000 fine."  Neither one is fair because it forces consumers to contribute to the profit margins of insurance, medical, and pharmaceutical corporations so they can pay executive bonuses and pay corporate shareholders..., but SCOTUS says it's a "tax."  (Corporate fascism, anyone?)  We ALL should be able to buy into Medicare: no overhead, no corporate profits to worry about, no bonuses or shareholder payouts, it's already running efficiently (believe it or not), so it's a not-for-profit single-payer system.  New government employees would have to be hired to take care of the influx of new paperwork, and the taxes and spending they do would have an immediate impact on the economy.  Our Congress Critters AND Obama were damned fools to adamantly and categorically refuse to even discuss a not-for-profit single-payer health insurance option!  Period!  It would be the BEST system for We The People.  Instead, we get corporate crap!]

At the same time, if a Social Security recipient is receiving rental assistance through HUD, the landlord also raises the rent if there's a cost-of-living increase for Social Security.

The Social Security recipient can end up receiving less in actual spending money after a cost-of-living increase than before!

See, this is why I, as a Social Security and Medicare recipient, do not want Social Security OR Medicare messed with in ANY way whatsoever!

And in our oligarchy, every four years we get to choose between a socially liberal but economic fascist or a guy who is a social fascist as well.

Sort of like the choice between a shit sandwich on rye or a shit sandwich or whole wheat.

NonnyO has sure got it right.  Those of us living on SSI have $700 a month to live on.  We are constantly means tested.  If for some reason we receive more than that a month, it gets deducted from our SSI dollar for dollar.  If I didn't receive HUD and SNAP(food stamps) assistance, I couldn't live independently.  As someone said, we don't all have family we can move in with.  How can we be expected to live on less?  Especially since the politicians doing their corporate and billioniare bosses bidding (who determine what we have to live on) have such cushy jobs with excellent healthcare and pensions.  Then they end up bartering their influence to get rich.  And they think WE'RE the "leeches".

    •  Medicare is not working efficiently (0+ / 0-)

but the ACA is working on that.

it is the high costs of Medicare/Medicaid that are costing the Government too much and is the main driver of the deficit.

Single payer is not the total answer.
