    If you want to expand SS and Medicare, you have to build a constituency for it, and you need to have powerful leaders behind it.  But we haven't had any leadership on the left in this country in 60 years.  And the majority of the natural constituency for this kind of thing--retirees and near-retirees--self-identifies as conservative and is full of resentment and loathing toward anyone different from them.

    Instead, how about doing something for younger working people who are already on our side, more are less, and are struggling right now?  Living wage, family and medical leave, expanded childcare, student debt forgiveness.  These reinforce Democratic family values, and we're just leaving them on the table.
