  •  Heh. The Verrazano Bridge, connecting (9+ / 0-)

Staten Island to Brooklyn, was paid for in tolls -- promised to be temporary until the bridge was paid for -- just saw the toll go up to $13. That's $13 to travel from one part of NYC to another. And the Transit Authority is floating raising the toll to $15.

Same deal on tolls for all the tunnels and bridges.

Don't get me started on subways. Even the discount cards available have risen in the 20% range in the last while.

At least, the commoners.  The overlords just take off in their helicopters.

We were told the turnpike would be tolled only until it was paid off. Tolls never stopped and have been doubled in the last few years. Now our governor wants to sell it for pennies on the dollar to some private company that will probably double or triple tolls again. His selling point is they will pay all maintenance, but with traffic — especially long-distane semis — flooding off the turnpike onto parallel roads, taxpayers will pay way more to fix them over 75 years than will be brought in by the lease – and most likely (as in the parking meter franchise in Chicago), used up in the first year.
