  •  Cuts are abstract; the eligibility age is concrete (14+ / 0-)

"Obama cut $400 billion from Medicare!" was an effective scare line for Republicans in the last election, but you know what? It didn't really sink in and it didn't matter. Know why? Because nobody really got hurt. The cuts weren't to benefits. Most especially, nobody's grandparents died -- and nobody's grandparents will die -- specifically, and provably, because of them.

Can you imagine -- after spurning "Medicare for all" -- the backlash if Obama proposes and passes "Medicare for fewer?" Even Democrats will be furious. And that's the ones whose grandparents don't actually die. But there will, literally, be people who die because they can't get insurance at age 65; and there will be many more who stay stuck in miserable jobs in their not-so-golden years because they'll die otherwise.

Do you have any idea how enthusiastic Republicans will be about sweeping together all the (very real) anecdotes of pain and suffering due to this change and packaging them up in a nice tidy bundle for the 2014 and 2016 elections? Some Democrats are so blind that they believe, "Oh, sure, I guess some 65- and 66-year-olds might be upset..." Here's a clue, EVERYONE expects themselves, and their loved ones, to be 65 years old someday. EVERYONE -- except the very fortunate -- will have a real and specific grudge to hold against Democrats for this. I know I will.

Horrible policy -- costing Americans $2 for every $1 the government "saves." Even worse politics -- providing solid proof that Democrats will NOT protect Medicare when feeble push comes to gentle shove. This is just the worst idea ever. It would be better to make big abstract dollar-amount cuts to the program and then fill the holes back in later, which absolutely can and will happen, especially if those cuts are hitting the medical industry's profits. Hell, Republicans are the ones who passed the biggest Medicare expansion (the prescription drug benefit) in recent memory! But pushing the retirement age forward? That will enrich the medical industry, and therefore, it will NEVER get undone.

What is wrong with Democrats? Seriously? Doing something this politically and humanly destructive to avoid stupid budget holes that can be filled back in any time? Holes that will have wealthy constituencies clamoring to have them filled in until Republicans let it happen? Wake up, people! This is such a bad idea that it deserves the term "suicidal." Although "homicidal" is not far off the mark, either.

Democrats should get off the fence and bombard Team Obama with demands that he publicly reject this horrible idea outright. It's the worst idea ever. Much worse than the stupid "fiscal cliff" cuts, which can and will be negated whenever wailing defense contractors beat their Republican lackeys back into horse-trading and submission.
