Who profits? Drugs are illegal, not because politicians are stupid, but because several someones are making a lot of money that way.  Ask why it's still illegal when alcohol prohibition only lasted a dozen years.

It seems a lot of politicians come out against the drug war... After they leave office. I remember George Shultz doing the same. What's up with that, and why don't any IN office ever say this?

politicians are cowards- they're thinking about the ads that will be run against them in the next election, rather than what is best for their constituents.

I think there's serious money behind keeping drugs illegal. It not only benefits drug lords, but also the alcohol and pharma industries.

I live way out in the back of beyond, and the town where my lab is in the OK panhandle. Small town, nothing special, yet they have a SWAT team, paid for with drug money.
Every time the SWAT team meets for exercises (remember, this is red, red Oklahoma), they have to make this big announcement so that people don't freak out. :)
