  •  OMG, say "Death Panels" again (6+ / 0-)

It reminds me of a tweet I once read: "Threepio, shut down all the death panels on the detention level!"

Whenever anyone says "death panels", that's what I think of. And the fact that before Obamacare, we already had death panels. They were run by the health insurance corporations.

as long as we've had health insurance we've had death panels.  For example, cancer patient who shows no signs of cancer goes in for screenings each year to make sure the cancer isn't coming back.  One CT shows something funny on the lymph nodes, but they can't tell.  Another CT won't help, they need a PET scan.  Well a PET scan is, what, $7k compared to a CT at $1.5k.  Insurance company says, Well, you don't KNOW it's cancer, so no, patient can't have PET scan, we won't pay for it.  Doctor says Of course we don't KNOW it's cancer, that's why we need the PET scan!!  Insurance company says Well tough, tell the patient she can pay for it herself then.  We're only authorizing another CT.  Doctor tells patient, patient says No fucking way I don't have $7k lying around this is why I have insurance!  BLARGH!  Doctor fights with insurance company (because this doctor is a nationally recognized oncologist in his specialty area), but ultimately gets nowhere.  Doctor begs patient to at least get the CT, they will get their best RT to take the images to make sure they get the clearest picture possible.  Patient gets CT, doctor says Whew, looks like the last CT was just bad, lymph nodes look fine on this one (and compared to the last 20-something CTs you have had over the years).  But we are going to watch this close, you better get your ass back in here in six months!  Patient says Okay fine but I hate doctor's appointments.

In this story the patient is okay.  What if the second CT was still inconclusive?  Still no PET scan?  We're not talking about designer drugs for some minor issue, we're talking about a life threatening illness.  I dare Rethuglicans to tell me THAT isn't a death panel.
