  •  it is clearly not true that ideas and policies are (6+ / 0-)

given deference in the media in proportion to their demonstrated support.

look at the media's much greater focus on solving the problem of debt/deficit than on solving unemployment.  polls show most americans think UE is a bigger problem.

look at the media coverage after lehman collapsed but before the bailout.  media were clearly very supportive of bailing out wall st, even though it was very unpopular.

by contrast, media coverage of the auto bailout was not nearly as pro-bailout.

look at the general media coverage of universal health care.  single payer is vastly more popular in polls than in media.  more than once i heard that universal health care does not have enough support to pass, even though it was polling very well.  media measures support in washington much more than support in general population.

look at media coverage of trade policy.  trade restrictions are generally popular, but are ignored in the media.

look at their coverage of foreign policy.  commentators and people like mccain are on TV regularly advocating for increased role by US military in many areas, even though that is usually unpopular.  how often are reflexively anti-war commentators on TV?

look at how often entitlement cuts are advocated by "non-partisan" commentators.  those are generally very unpopular.

oil subsidies are unpopular, but are not advocated nearly as often by non-partisan commentators as entitlement cuts are.

how often are there big stories about poverty in america?

i think not all of those popular things i mentioned are good policies, but media is absolutely not at all fair in their approach to those issues.

on popular acclaim for ideas nor on their veracity.
