    I was surprised when people I thought were friends ran for the hills...as if it may be contagious.

      It still surprises me, how utterly unprepared we are culturally for dealing with bereaved people. Send a card and bake a casserole - THIS is what we know to do.

      My friend William, who was with us in the hospital when Ashlie died, got married five months after her death. His mother had passed away years before and his bride had recently lost her grandfather. At their wedding reception there was one table set up with photos and candles. Among the photos of their deceased loved ones, was a lovely photo of Ashlie. Somehow they had managed to bring that grief into a moment of joy and it was beautiful.  

      But that is so rare, I wish it were not so.
