Our president is pretty good at getting what he really wants, and a "Grand Bargain" is what he has clearly wanted all along.
Which is exactly why he originally wanted his interview with the Des Moines Register off the record.  He did not want his base to know that he would still be pursuing pretty much the same terms as proposed in the original Grand Bargain.  I have never seen any politician put something on the table that he is not willing to negotiate with and we have to remember that the President is the one who put the social safety net on the table.

I have said it before.  I believe the President thinks that his long term legacy will be getting the national debt under control.  I also believe that will be a false legacy if he is willing to gut the social safety net to get there.  You cannot sell out the poorest and neediest to get a Grand Bargain.  Further, Social Security has not contributed one single cent to the deficit.  However, we should realize that the Social Security trust fund alone holds 20% of the national debt.

The minute that I heard that the President and Boehner were going to negotiate in private, my heart sunk.  The Grand Bargain is going to be grand for the Rethugs, but not for the people of this country who deserve better.  This will end up being death panels for many people in this country.  And if the Democrats in Congress go along with this, I say to hell with the Democratic Party in the process too.
