    with the same valences as negro in "magic negro."

    For much of our country's history, mulattoes were considered tragic, because they represented spoiled white blood (don't you know), and even in a certain way spoiled black blood.  They were often thought to be weak, languid, and dispirited, as opposed to their strong black forebears.

    So in calling these mixed-race people "tragic mulattoes," the diarist is emphasizing their self-pity and fixation with race.  For them, to be biracial is not to be post-racial; it is to be forever dwelling on both races.

    A 47% return on investment--that's pretty doggoned good!
