Obama is demanding that the top marginal rates go up.
He is also refusing to negotiate on the debt ceiling.

The GOP will be responsible for rate increases across the board, spending cuts across the board and a default on the national debt.

The deal that will be cut will be done post-Jan 1 which willl reduce the marginal rates on the lower brackets back to the Bush rates.  There will then be discussions on dividends/capital gains, loophole closures and spending cuts.

With fewer tea partiers in the next Congress, Boehner will have an opportunity to craft a deal that essentially reduces tax rates and softens some spending cuts.  I doubt there will be anything done on medicare because frankly nothing needs to be done.  Obamacare, if fully implemented, is projected to bend the cost curve by the end of the decade.  Social security will be off limits.

The plan will be to let tax rate increases, Obamacare, infrastructure spending and job growth fix the deficit.  Not a bad plan actually.  That's similar to what we did in 1993.

Boehner has to show his base that he's being "tough." That means he can't cut a deal till the last minute, even if he's willing to take whatever Obama's offering.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's no deal till after the new Congress is seated.

Obama negotiates.  I wouldn't trust him to buy a used car for me much less defend medicare.
