  •  Short term vs. medium term. Tactics vs. strategy. (3+ / 0-)

In the short term, "going off the cliff" might be a PR disaster for the GOP without doing much harm to the economy.

But if not fixed within a few weeks or a month or so, "going off the cliff" would amount to replicating European austerity programs. And they've been economically disastrous.

So the question is whether the potential tactical PR gain is worth the risk of strategic economic loss.

    •  More simply, it boils down to principles. Stick (1+ / 0-)

to the right principles and let the chips fall where they may.

      •  What principles? (0+ / 0-)

My principles involve easing the lot of the unemployed, the working poor, the middle class. Going off the "fiscal cliff" for more than a few weeks would hurt them.

social security age would?  Because that is probably what the Rethugs will demand in exchange for not going off the cliff.

            around...

The pressure from the White House and the Senate AND us could force R's to cave this time around.  We gotta stand strong and let our POTUS know we have his back as long as he keeps the Rethuglicans' feet to the fire.

    •  And that fix will be made with R House majority, (0+ / 0-)

still fixated on austerity and cutting social insurance programs.

Will next year's House be any better than the current one? As long as Rs have the House majority, I don't love any of the options.
