  •  I live on 36K in the SF Bay Area (11+ / 0-)

And I am not starving by any means.  Anyone who says 250K is not rich is just not aware of how fortunate they are.

The problem is that rich keeps getting redefined.

When I was making $12/hr, I thought I was doing ok. Then I made $15/hr and thought I was doing great for a few months and then that became normal and the stuff that afforded me was just normal, then I made $20/hr and benefits and I was rolling in it, until it's ok but I'm not rich.

For people at 250k, it's likely the same. 250k , but they got to put their kids in a nice school and a nice summer camp. Clothes, computer, Ipad and cell phones, cable, the swimming pool. And they are putting money into retirement and college accounts. Everyone has expenses and no one thinks they are 'rich' in the sense of idle rich.

    •  Expenses? You mean everyone that thinks they (2+ / 0-)

aren't rich because after they spend it, there's so little left!  It's just what they spend it on (e.g. $40K private school tuition) is a luxury that can't be bought by the average family.

I've noticed the "$250K isn't rich" plaint comes from the squishiness of what "middle class" could mean.  As an income, of course it isn't middle class if it's the top 6% of income.  But the people complaining about it really mean "This is all the house I can afford on this income, and this is not how a rich person would live."  There may be something to that, but whining about a million dollar house does not make one middle class either.  Even if this is all you get for your million.

There's also the tendency to only compare oneself to peers instead of all the people earning far, far less.  Doesn't make one middle class when everyone you know earns $250K either.
