is what I understood about the increase in premiums but I have to check the details.  These folks would be past their earning years and still getting a decent income that a lot of people don't even have when they're raising a family.  Medicare provides great coverage and giving it up because of a 15% rise in premiums would be unwise.

    •  Current Medicare premiums (4+ / 0-)

Standard Medicare premium is $104.90/ month for Part B.   For single people, it's an additional $42/month with an adjusted gross income over $85K; an additional $104.90/month with income over $107K; an additional $167.80/month with income over $160K; and $220.80/month with income over $214K.  Income limit x2 for married people.

Yes, Medicare is a great deal.  But I think a lot of people believe they paid for Medicare while they were working.  The premiums aren't trivial.

You might be surprised how many people are on Social Security/ Medicare and still raising a family.

      •  Insurance is definitely not cheap. (4+ / 0-)

People with that amount of AGI in retirement probably have a decent net worth.  They probably have other forms of insurance like long term care as well.

in other words, catastrophic insurance with no money left over for real healthcare, screening,r preventative medicine

$104 plus $127 plus $15 for the three parts of Medicare,......with NO out of pocket NONE...and have had wellness and screening and tests long needed...pointing out yet again the huge savings to be had from early buy in for Medicare that would really help those budget numbers...many low income seniors go without insurance and healthcare, and by the time they hit 65 m,any many are way behind, sometimes catastrophically, sometimes fatally behind, and all that delayed medical care now costs way more now to the Medicare payees...and the health of the individual and their community and family.
