  •  from the story it seems the mother called (4+ / 0-)

911 and they asked her to perform CPR until EMS arrived, which mom DID NOT. It doesn't say why, only that she said she couldn't. Then the article says the 911 operator asked mom to move him to the floor/horizontal which mom couldn't  do because of her age (69) and bad knees.

It goes on to say it took 10 minutes for EMS to arrive. And that they assessed that the victim was already dead at the time, which, if they rest of the account is true, is probably right. Ten minutes is a long time to go without breathing or consciousness.

While I agree that transgender people are disgustingly treated in every walk of society, I'm not sure this is a case of it. Interestingly enough, I find the victims treatment at the Harlem Hospital weeks before a much clearer case of medical negligence and transgender bias.

First of all, she was self administering hormones. Probably because of NO health coverage and even if she had health coverage, gender dysphoria and transition treatments are not covered. that's the first problem. So she order hormones off the internet. Shit. Hormones are serious business.

Second, when those hormones started effecting, in this case, blood sugar levels and her ability to regulate it, she presented at ER. They should have taken blood samples which would have shown her to be diabetic or borderline. They apparently didn't. Or ignored the lab results, preferring instead to send her over to psych. WUT? Bullshit.

The real negligence is in our disgusting heath care system and the obvious negligence in the ER that could have prevented her from ever having gone into diabetic shock in the first place. A first world country? Ya, ok.

It is perfect because any objection reinforces the diagnosis.

years ago.  We were awakened at midnight by someone pounding on our door and a woman indicated her mother had fainted and was unresponsive.

We got her out of the car on the flat and began CPR though she was completely nonresponsive with no pulse.  CPR continued until the EMS arrived and was continued while she was transported to a tertiary care center some 60 miles away.  She was pronounced on arrival but CPR did not cease until the ER doc called it.

I am trained in CPR but could not render it.  I cannot maintain a kneeling position and also lack sufficient strength on my left side so there may have been physical reasons why the mother could not initiate CPR.  CPR does require a certain degree of physical fitness

    •  We all self administer hormones (3+ / 0-)

when we don't have medical coverage, and there are perfectly good hormones available on the internet.

Since the US system says we are disposable garbage, we go around the US system to get what we need. Other, more civilized countries, are willing to provide it.

      •  i feel ya, there. I am self administering (0+ / 0-)

asthma treatment. ordered symbicort from overseas. I have my life back.I have insurance but don't want asthma on my medical record.

As for other counries, yes, I share your frustration. I have a trans friend in UK and I've been following her transition. Se started electrolysis and hormones this last few weeks and couldn't be happier.

Sucks here for any medical condition, but worse, I'm sure, for transfolk.
