  •  I was at Randolf AFB when they were having (10+ / 0-)

a "fly in" for a special occasion..

We had a C5 drop in (almost literally) on the longest runway and get stuck at the end (he "fell off the pavement") the next flight in was a B-52.  He circled the field a couple of times and lined up for the short runway.

When he cleared the fence, he hit full reverse thrusters and pulled his chute before he even touched down.  He came to a stop at the end... 6 inches to spare.

Take off was also on the short runway.  They put in enough "gas" to get him up and to the base in Austin.  They towed him out to the runway, got him lined up - tail across the runway road, filled his water tanks and started him up.  He cleared the runway and the low trees at the end of the clear zone.

    •  OBTW, they were thinking of using the (0+ / 0-)

JATO (RATO) packs on him... But instead they used them on the C5-Galaxy..

and one year the winds on departure day for the guest MAC C-5A were, um, wrong. She had to hang out, IIRC, overnight -- that runway really was too short, and I don't think you could put a BUFF down on it, never mind lift one back into the air off it. Of course, at Reese the overrun is sandburs and caliche; at Barksdale it was gumbo mud...

      •  My uncle was at Barksdale for "2" tours, we (0+ / 0-)

as kids used to play on the clay dunes under the end of the runway beyond the fence.

The fun was over when some of the kids starting using sling shots to toss rocks and clay balls at the aircraft....
