Kelly AFB was a maintenance depot for B-52's. The runway was 11,500 x 300, but they were brought in with minimum fuel so that landing was not an issue and defueling was less of a chore. Pretty routine until they closed the runway for some intensive work and the BUFF's operated off the main taxiway instead. People on the flight line used to stop to watch that. Needless to say, they took off "light" as well.
