In my opinion, the money is very important -perhpas overwhlemingly so.

i agree that the tea-baggers themselves have little money.  The Tea Parties only became a major political force because of the generous funding they got from wealthy and corporate interests.

Despite the relatively few tea party-aligned representatives in congress, the tea party ideals (small government, reduced taxes, reduced regulation) get wide support in Washington, even among democrats.  Why is this?  Because those ideals are the wishes of the wealthy and corporate interests whose campaign "donations" have a profound influence on the thinking and votes of the legislative and executive.

Billionaires know how to spend money to get what they want. They needed a disguise to appear as a populist movement. They went out and bought hundreds of old fat angry white men suits and a case of Lipton Tea. What a bargain!

Thoise wealthy and corporate interests have the money to spend on an election.

And it becomes a savvy investment when they stand to gain much more in tax breaks, reduced labor costs, reduced business regulations, etc.

financially. anecdotal, but the  some of the ones I know  are retired with good pensions, (the ones who have a home AND buy the RV the size of a semi truck),  another one is  a house husband with a wife who makes big bucks on wall street....others are entrepeneurs. a few are building expensive bunker style hideaways for when the teabag nation gets to protect itself with guns..(.their favorite fantasy.)
i see them as people who over the years got  addicted to the teabag talking points and pundits. they are bullies, cowards and angry all the time at anyone who is different than they are.
the local ones are poorer,  more obvious in a crowd, and just as cranky and close minded.

types, and racist groups like skinheads and KKK who found a respectable home, or so the media thinks Baggers are respectable, in  the Tea Party.  Yet those who not a part of the racist hate groups are blind to this. They refuse to hate just Who is drawn to the Tea Party and how the worst of the haters and racists feel they have a home now where before they were pretty much shunned by the media and society for last couple of decades.

Teabaggers are the way the GOP keeps their wingnuts in the fold.
