  •  Rush does have an annual charity event (7+ / 0-)

that raises money for Leukemia. And he donates tea to different groups. He's not all evil, just maybe 98 percent.

    •  sponsoring an event or lending your name to an (13+ / 0-)

event is not the same as coughing up some of your own ill gotten lucre.  How much does he donate to charity each year?  I seem to remember that the higher the income bracket the lower the charitable contributions

Tea to different groups?  Is he the one behind the movement to teabag the Potomac?

    •  a small price to pay to be rid of him (5+ / 0-)

This is like saying Don Corleone is a good man because he loves his family and goes to church.  Or every apologist for Marie Antoinette.

I have never understood the tendency of people to excuse enormous impersonal evil because the person doing it or passively benefiting from it is a good neighbor or something.  How blind or weak are we to be so easily mollified by externals and charitable disposal of ill-gotten wealth?

Oh - and the Palm Beach Charity events.  I did an expose on that years ago.

Most of those Charity Balls are ego-strokers for the rich.  The money spent on the balls (the dresses for the balls, the food, the entertainment, the jewels) OFTEN far exceeds the money raised there.  And only a handful of those events don't pay their bloated overhead out of the proceeds.  The rich would be smarter to just send a check to the charity's home office.  But of course, then they couldn't be seen there and have their pictures snapped as evidence of their charitable hearts.

There are some good charities on the island - I must add that.  There are people there who truly do good...and some very generous rich folks.  You can look up which ones have the lowest overhead, like the excellent Cystic Fibrosis charity.

I don't know how Rush's event fits into that picture.  It would be interesting to see the accounting figures of his charity.
