    •  Well, not really (6+ / 0-)

In the 19th Century, Irish immigrants were pictured as lazy, ignorant drunkards who spawned more and more babies. Italians and Jews got their share. It's all the same, we have never learned as a people to welcome the new stranger.

Ann Coulter probably has a Hispanic cleaning woman, gets her processed hair done at a beauty shop that uses Hispanic woman to sweep up the hair and wash the towels, and wears clothes sewn by a Hispanic man or woman. She is actually a hidden treasure for the cause of immigration reform. Her vitriol is so caustic, it arouses the most lackadaisical moderate to resist.

She is a tall, skinny, processed monster with false eyelashes and false boobs. Her person is a testament to her shallowness. Intellectual she is not.

      •  I teach the history of waves of immigration (5+ / 0-)

including Irish slavery in the New World.

But it is clear that it didn't take very long - sometimes only one or two generations for some groups to simply become "white".

black slavery between 1500-1800 was never a European institution, although it was Europeans who initiated and engaged in the slave trade. His conclusion was that Europeans had recently gone through enslavement themselves as a societal institution, broken with the collapse of the Roman Empire, and that the people were wary of it returning to Europe -- because it could result in the slavery of the poorer white classes as it existed before. The Irish were certainly amongst the worst victims of slavery -- at the hands of Vikings and others.

Accordingly, the Church and royal rulers authorized the slave trade, but limited its societal institution to the New World.

The word comes from Slavs as the people of eastern Europe who were slaved in large numbers. The reason Europe never had many black slaves is that black slaves were used for tropical crops plantation starting with sugar. Sugar was worked in the Easter Mediterranean islands by the Genoese in plantation with Slavic slaves. When the plantations moved to the New World they were staffed with African slaves for several reasons.

Slavery was present in Europe until very late but it was for very rich people, it was a luxury. You had already very cheap rural laborers, when not serfs in Europe, there was no need for slavery

    •  Which, if you know any African immigrants (11+ / 0-)

is the most bizarre slur of all.  As a historian, you know this whole "real Americans" thing is always being redefined.  I even know this from family history - my Grandmother grew up speaking German just before WWI when German was as much a second language in parts of the Midwest as Spanish is now.  WWI put an end to that and precipitated a wave of assimilation. She grew up speaking German as the third generation here. This crap about Latino immigrant kids forming Spanish language enclaves and not becoming part of the nation as a whole is nothing but racism and they would know this if they looked at older pattersn of white, non-English immigration.  The risk rather, is that Latino kids will lose the ability of Spanish, not that they won't assimilate.   There's already 200,000 Mexican-American kids who have returned with parents to Mexico who can't speak Spanish - it's a problem for the Mexican education system.  The point is, if you control for melanin, there's not a damn bit of difference in terms of Latino immigrant ability to mainstream into society now versus every other group in the past.

Time was when Italians, Spaniards, Greeks, and various Levantine peoples (most emphatically including ethnic Jews) were considered too dark to be "white". Then they worked their way up the ladders and into the (lower) corridors of power, and suddenly their skin color wasn't such a big deal after all. (Especially not after the suntan - rather than fish-belly pallor - became the hallmark of the Idle Rich.)

          Not your body,
          Then it's
          Not your choice
          And it's
          None of your damn business!
