some houseguests a few years ago; people who knew better than the "lazy Latinos" meme, but incensed that those people were coming illegally to the USA to get welfare benefits and drive up taxes.

Ironically, they were driving a car with expired, out-of-state license plates (they had tried to avoid paying California's high out-of-state car registration fees some years earlier and eventually had to pay several years worth, fees they could easily afford). And now they were in Southern California where there were, at the time, frequent daytime checkpoints intended to apprehend "illegals", impounding their cars.

Said houseguests were astounded to learn that those "illegals" were not guilty of a felony crime, as they thought, but the lack of documentation was a civil matter not unlike their undocumented car. They learned a bit about driving around in fear of getting caught.

By coincidence I had just finished reading Enrique's Journey, so was full of facts, figures, and true stories about immigrants' struggles to escape extreme poverty. And I probably used 'em all, insufferably.

from a Pullitzer prize winning series published in the LA Times. A documentary has also been made of it, that I have not seen. I can't imagine that the documentary could include all the context and stats that are in the book.
