    ...of the students at the South Side Chicago Catholic high school where I once taught. The two parent families often had one parent working nights while the other worked days. The single parent families often had one parent working two jobs. The teenagers often had jobs also, to help pay for their education as well as household expenses.

    I often knew some of their parents' incomes and their jobs because they were on the college applications and scholarship forms the students handed me when it was letter of recommendation season.

    I'm not great at math, but after seeing some of their incomes and how much they paid for their child's education, I wondered how some of them got through the week. Most of their sacrifice while cleaning downtown buildings, working on assembly lines, doing construction, or sitting down at office work was for their children.

    That constitutes lazy? Talk like that gets on the fightin' side of me.
