      for employees on their last day of a job.

      If someone is popular, or a valuable employee, or has a good boss, they are taken out by the department as gesture of good will.

      If the employee leaves the job practically ignored -- well, one or more of those three can be assumed. (And sometimes good people just vanish from a job, & the lack of any kind of formal good-bye was not meant as a slight. I've experienced both extremes.)

      But when a departing employee tries to make a show of their departure, & no one cares -- or practically no one shows up for the good-bye lunch -- well, that person was definitely not valued for either their friendship of contributions. If that person is smart, he will not use anyone at that job as a reference.
