  •  Battleground Congressional Districts (6+ / 0-)

From a NYT article about how GOP reps seem to think they have the ability to ignore the popular will.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee on Monday began automated phone calls in 35 Republican House districts accusing members of “holding the middle class hostage to get more reckless, budget-busting tax cuts for millionaires.” Unions and liberal interest groups have run advertisements, mounted protests and organized phone campaigns to pressure Republicans to increase tax rates for the rich.
More of this. I know gerrymandering has fucked with district lines. They can't have been fucked with so much that marginal districts are somehow for tax cuts for the rich and cutting entitlements. Increasing awareness in these districts of issues involved should either put pressure on these GOP reps to compromise or help defeat them in 2014.  The article had this paragraph...
“I do believe we have to do what’s right for the country,” said Representative James B. Renacci, Republican of Ohio, who competed in one of the most expensive House races in the country against a Democratic incumbent in a redrawn district and still won by a surprisingly comfortable 4.4 percentage points. “But I have a real problem raising tax rates as an answer.”
There is no way a GOP rep who won by 4.4 should feel comfortable going against public opinion.
