    if he's referring to Boehner and McConnell when he whines about "having two leaders as the face of the party who have both been in Washington since 1986 does no good restoring credibility". Boehner has only been in Washington since 1990, and McConnell since 1984.

    As for "moral opaqueness on the role of government in the lives of Americans", it seems to me that Bush, Cheney, and the GOP of their era were very clear about morality and government in their desire to use it to enforce the moral "principles" of their party base as national law.  There was also a lot of holier-than-thou moralizing about the alleged necessity of prosecuting the Iraq war indefinitely, about which relatively little criticism was heard from Erickson and others whose devotion to small-government conservatism evidently dates back only to 2009.

    Of course, the Red Staters probably think that all this would be different if their beloved Rick Perry were nominated; then voters would install his small government heartland values into power just like they did not long ago with another straight talking Texas governor...oh, wait...
