He hadn't heard about the shooting so I pre-emptively brought it up when I picked him up from school.

Our school has had some issues, especially last year when there were death threats on FB toward a classmate of his.  It made the local news and arrests were made.  This is a safe suburban district, fairly wealthy and a good rating.

We talked on the way home from school about school safety and I told him his school takes safety very seriously.  Sometimes bad people just do bad things and that this hardly ever happens.  That he is safe at school.  We also talked about what he should do should something like this happen in his school.  I told him  if he's near a door with a lock go in and lock it. If he's in the middle of a room drop under a desk and lay quiet.

I realized I was just guessing.  Does anyone with real knowledge have any proven advice to give someone in such a situation?
