  •  Today is not the day to talk about gun control (44+ / 0-)

but tomorrow freaking is. I'm a serious 2nd Amendment supporter and believe US citizens have the right to own guns for many reasons, but if you look at the latest reports, they claim he used a .223 caliber rifle.

For those who don't know, a .223 Remington round is the exact same external dimensions as the 5.56x45mm NATO rifle cartridge, made popular by being used by NATO countries in the M16 and M4 rifles. While it's found popularity by ranchers to deal with coyote and predator problems, this round was designed with one purpose in mind: to maim humans. It's a fairly inhumane game hunting round, but it is light and fast, excellent at piercing older body armor technologies and car doors. Simply put: there is a reason US Marines affectionately referred to the M16 in Vietnam as the "Meat Cleaver".

I said it when the "Joker" shot up the movie theater, and I'll say it again - there is absolutely no reason it should be legal for me to go out and buy a rifle that will hold 30-100 rounds of this ammunition in one magazine. I don't need it to provide food for my family. I don't need it for self defense (it's famously known for traveling through multiple homes in a neighborhood when used in that situation). The only reason people buy these weapons is to play pretend soldier in their crappy little militias.

You want to own a hunting rifle? Fine. Shotgun for personal defense? Okay. Assault rifles? That's where we need to draw the line. These rifles are killing more people in each attack than most cities see with concealed handguns in a year. The effectiveness of these shooters is what is so frightening - 30 people were shot, and 27 of them died. They figured out what weapons they need to be using to do the most damage. We need to take them away.

(30 people were shot, and 30 is the most common magazine size for an AR-15 style assault rifle. Coincidence?)

though 100 shots were fired, and shooter had four guns.  more information is still forthcoming...but I agree with everything you said, fukcing making assault weapons illegal would be a good place to start, to end this kind of complete insanity.

    •  I really hate guns (0+ / 0-)

Unless I live in the country (in which case you really need a shotgun, wild packs of abandoned dogs are nothing to fool with) I will never have one. I wish we didn't have the 2nd amendment, but we do.

That being said, there's a world of difference, as Defender says, between having a hunting rifle and having an armor-piercing automatic that can shoot 700 rounds per minute. That's not protecting yourself, that's slaughtering people.

"You want to own a hunting rifle? Fine. Shotgun for personal defense? Okay. "

Why can those things not be provided through laws vs rights?  Why is it important to be a right?

Is there really going to be an armed overthrow of the US federal government?

    •  Thanks for adding some sanity (2+ / 0-)

to this insane, heart-wrenching, sickening day.  I will never own a gun.  I don't want to outlaw guns.  But there is a balance that must be struck - and you've laid it out here.

I was visiting my son in Ireland when the Virginia Tech shootings occurred.  The Irish news anchor asked "What is it about guns that Amercians love so much that they are willing to put up with this?"  Great question...

emotional and coming to terms with a tragedy ..the killing of so many young , sweet, innocent kids and around the holidays too.  It is almost too much for me to comprehend and people are in shock.  It is the worst school shooting in our history, much worse than Columbine.
