Three Miles From Connecticut Shooting, a Bastion of Gun Rights

Just across the highway from Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in a stately white building with an American flag flying out front, is the headquarters of the United States’ premiere industry association for gun retailers.

It’s not the consumer-focused National Rifle Association. The National Shooting Sports Foundation has kept a lower profile over the years, but is likely the second-most-powerful force for firearms use in the country.

right down the highway from Newtown, less than 1/2 hour away.

Bridgeport's a poor, urban city with some gang related shootings.  They haven't reached anywhere near Newtown's number yet.

But they don't have the NRA's support, thank goodness.

      •  One of the things I noted in a reporter's (6+ / 0-)

comments was 'how nice the houses in the neighborhood were' (paraphrasing). I am sure nothing was intentionally meant by the comment, but it reinforced to me how much of the country turns a blind eye to violence in poor areas where the houses are not so nice.

        •  I thought that too. (6+ / 0-)

The mass shootings tend to be in suburban areas.  We tend to ignore the daily shootings in many cities.  I live in Philadelphia.  There are daily shootings in many neighborhoods in Philly as well as Camden.  But one at a time and in black neighborhoods rather than suburbs seems to be tolerated.  Even though most of these killings are also young people, many of them children.
