  •  I couldn't. (7+ / 0-)

I really flew off the handle yesterday on Facebook.  And I'm still not sorry.  If there's anything worth going 'round the bend about, it's this.  I usually let these things (so many of them!) go in one ear and out the other, but the idea of a neighborhoodful of school children just sent me off the deep end.

Absolutism is the name of the problem.  When you think of it, we make exceptions to all our rules.  For example, the free speech part of the first amendment is not absolute--we make an exception for libel.  Second amendment absolutists will just have to grow up about this and accept reasonable restrictions.

Because I'm tired of being reasonable about it.  Their turn now.

Most people seem to feel the way you do.  Most of my friends who own guns are fine with tightening up the laws a LOT. They are heartsick about this.

People get confused about free speech.  It says "THE GOVERNMENT shall make no law..." It does not say a private citizen can't kick you out of their party for saying stupid stuff (I kicked a whackjob racist out of my house at a party once, you should have heard the crap he was spouting), or that, for instance, you can't get kicked off this site for saying something objectionable.  I'm not the government. Markos isn't the government.

I still find the interpretation of the 2nd confusing, but oh well...

I didn't argue with anybody.  Everybody who reacted at all "liked" and "shared" my stuff.  What happened is that I had been unaware of the body count all day, and when I came home and found out how many kids had been killed, I'd had enough, and so I just took this, "OK, gun people, I'm tired of listening to you, so shut up forever more" attitude.

If I have friends who disagree, they have either jumped into their foxholes for the time being, or unfriended me.  I haven't done any checking.  ;-)

As far as first amendment rights go, I know a lot of people who say really awful things, and when you tell them, "That's a horrible thing to say!" they start talking about free speech.  I just say, "Let me explain how free speech works.  You get to say any dumbass thing you want, and I get to object to it."
