... this conversation.  I agree with the broad scope of your suggestions:

Re-instate the assault weapons ban, however imperfect. Limit the magazine and clip capacities. Register all guns and make sure both they, and the ammunition are traceable. Background checks for everyone and mandated training. Strict rules about the conditions under which guns are kept and an end to both concealed and open carry. A complete rollback of "Stand Your Ground" and a return to "Backs to the Wall". Waiting periods that mean something would help too.
    My additions:

    *  Improve access to mental health  and substance abuse treatment services
    *  De-stigmatize mental illness so more people are willing to avail themselves to those services
    *  Improve education and social services programs to help all kids grow up optimistic about their futures
    *  Stop glamorizing gun violence in "entertainment"
    *  Require insurance as part of gun licensing
    *  Add a tax on to gun and ammunition sales and use the proceeds to promote gun safety education and to pay for bullet proof vests for all law enforcement (my understanding is that at least some cops have to buy their own vests)

gun owners is that they oppose much of this.

Making ammunition and guns traceable ... It affects ONLY the criminals, so why the opposition?

Until they begin to accept that there will be inconvenience, and a modest cost to owning guns, then I will maintain that they are not serious, and part of the problem.

I am not prepared to excuse the deaths of children for the convenience of gun owners.

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.
