As a teacher of 37 years, your diary brought me to tears.  The last few years have been tough.  We always accept the budget cuts, frozen salaries and increased workloads.  We really do it because we love the kids.  The added demonization of us as as a profession and as individuals has made it very difficult and downright discouraging at times.

This comes at a time when our students face more challenges.  I teach in a school with a 70% poverty rate.  Many of my students live in a large apartment complex where there is a lot of illegal drug activity.  Many of them have heard or seen people victimized by gun violence.  The emotional scars are brought to school with them.  Yet every teacher and school employee in my building continues to do all they can for the kids and we are by no means unusual.  Why don't the wingers see this?

“It is the job of the artist to think outside the boundaries of permissible thought and dare say things that no one else will say."—Howard Zinn

There are none so blind as those who refuse to see?

I hope people outside of this site read comments like yours that tell of the day-to-day consequences of how policymakers and pundits have been treating your profession.
