  •  Switzerland is a prime example of (6+ / 0-)

of a gun culture, as opposed to a gun cult.

It's the lack of regulation, not the mere existence of guns, is the real lesson.

They also all have extremely secure safes to store their weapons in.  Home are routinely burgled without the thieves even trying to get the weapons - they know it's a lost cause.

In general they think of guns in a very different way. One of my friends who lived in Switzerland mentioned how she told the family she worked for she was on the skeet shooting team in college, and, in her words, "they were horrified". Guns aren't fun toys in Switzerland like they are to so many people here, they are dangerous weapons.

hunting is very popular, as is target shooting.

It should be noted that everyone has access to health care, no one is allowed to go hungry, and the Swiss simply aren't subjected to a lot of the same stressors Americans are.  Their overall crime rates are a lot lower, which is a big part of why their gun crime rates are so low.

They see guns as, well, guns.

        Few Americans do.

I shouldn't even have to say "they see guns as dangerous weapons" it should be repetitive to say so. All of that makes a huge difference too, especially access to mental healthcare. People aren't made to feel so hopeless for a myriad of reasons.

In the American culture, too often the gun is either a magic wand to right all wrongs or an embodiment of absolute evil.

I haven't been here long enough to be considered a Kossack, does that mean that I'm just a sack?

There are a lot of rifles and shotguns in Canada. Primarily because there's a lot of wilderness. I would never have a gun in the city or suburbia, but I'd certainly get myself a shotgun at least if I had to live out in the sticks, not because of wild imaginings that "the Other" is going to storm my house and murder me, but because if you're facing a sick and starving cougar, a shotgun is a lot more useful than, say, the complete works of Gandhi.

Guns are tools used to kill things. A tool meant to kill things is necessary in certain contexts, but only where there is a measurable chance of running into something that has to be killed.

Oh, and if you can -- ban handguns entirely. They have no legitimate civilian use. They have no military utility either, so perhaps you could sneak such a ban past the 2nd Amendment. It is already very difficult to own a handgun in Canada, and I'm hoping that one day it is made impossible.

They're a whole lot less likely to lose their shit.
