  •  I agree with your idea to reallocate parts of our (7+ / 0-)

military budget for upgrading our power grid  to "smarteer grids" for national security but, suspect that we would run into substantial political opposition from the Republicans about nationalizing the grid at a time when their top political agenda is to start the privatization of Medicare by raising the starting age.

There could be substantial numbers of jobs in upgrading American infrastructure and electrical grids.

Attack them from their right flank, they won't be able to counter that. Time to employ a little stragety. (h/t Bugs Bunny)

What we need is a nationalized HVDC (high voltage direct current) transmission grid  to act as a nation-wide transmission line backbone to connect the whole country (48 States) together in a common grid. That would allow us to move electricity around from places where it can be produced to places where it can be used.

Then we just need to develop national standards for the Smart-Grid technology so that local utility companies can implement the technology and it will work with and conform to other utility's systems. The local utility companies can still be privately-held regulated monoplolies like they are now.

A 360 mile long HVDC undersea cable from NJ to Virginia,  able to support 1700 4mw wind  turbines 10 to 20 miles offshore. Hopefully construction starts 2013.

HVDC is off the shelf, is great for long distance and undersea apps. HVDC transmission loss is 3% HVAC is 7%.
