    I looked into this a few months back fro my house.  There are still some limiting factors as to who can use solar effectively.  You have to have a large enough roof area facing the correct direction, and you cant have that much tree cover.

    I think the tech is still 5 to 10 years away from effectively being doable by all homeowners.

      My roof is totally unsuitable for solar panels, but I have a home solar electric system I built 11 years ago. The answer was to site my solar panels about 260 feet of wire away from my main electric panel in the best solar site that close to my house.

      Not everyone has a shade free piece of property, but many of us have cooperative neighbors who do, or we can put our solar panels up on poles away from our houses in a sunny spot on our property as I did.

        will and away isnt always enough when it comes to zoning issues.
