      transmission loss for AC, 3% for DC.

          High Voltage DC is now clearly more efficient than AC. Recent developments in HVDC technology, such as those made by ABB, make HVDC the way to go for transmitting large amounts of power from energy rich areas to net energy consuming areas. See this link for some examples and ideas:

          is the term for electricity "push" or you could compare it to hydraulic pressure.

          Line voltage is 156,000 volts. High voltage is 13,800, medium voltage is 4160, common industrial use voltage is 480. The pole at your house is likely 208v three phase, which is three legs of 120v each. (208 * square root of 3 = 120). You get 120v at the breaker box to distribute to your home. With alternating current, it's easy to change voltage up or down with transformers.

          Compared to 24v DC, it's a LOT easier to transmit AC over long distances. If you measure your voltage at the plug, it will be a little bit higher in some than others, but none of them should be less than 110v.

          At the dawn of electrical distribution, Edison got his clock cleaned by Tesla via Westinghouse money. Edison promoted DC, Westinghouse was funding Tesla's AC generators. Edison could not compete with the transmission capability of the AC generator.

          As for solar - I would put it as close to the ground as I could, because I want my panels cleaned regularly.
