    Yep, they don't like shade, and sure, part of the day will have less production than others. But, in many places they could be placed such that the lines never shadow them (if the lines run East-West), and in others, placed so shadows are minimized. In winter, the lower sun angle would further reduce any shading.  

    In addition, shading issues are a much bigger problem when you have your array wired in series feeding a single AC inverter. In this case, the production of the lowest-producing panel is the max you can get out of any panel. With micro-inverters, the panels are wired in parallel and that is eliminated. However, a direct grid feed is done via DC, so the wiring can be done in parallel without any special equipment.

      We are just finishing installation of 12 panels on our house, and we are using micro-inverters.

      are cost prohibitive, obviously.

      And summer - when shading issues from transmission lines are greatest - would be the time of max need / production / return.
